Member Spotlight: Paul Pietrowski, trombone

Paul Pietrowski, trombone

Outside of the quintet, where do you work?
I am a music educator in Guildford County, North Carolina.

What other instruments do you play?
As a music educator I know how to play all band instruments at a basic level.  Outside of the quintet I play the euphonium in the 440th Army Band and often play the alto trombone.

What is it like to be a member of a military band?
Being a member of the 440th Army Band is a rewarding experience.  We have an opportunity to play throughout the state of North Carolina for many unique occasions such as playing for dignitaries from other countries and welcoming home thousands of troops from Iraq.

Why did you choose to make music your career?
I was lucky to have excellent music teachers in school whose passion for music inspired me to participate in band through high school and eventually into college.

What is your favorite piece to play with the quintet?
Playing music with da Capo is very enjoyable, and it would be hard for me to pick just one piece as my favorite work.  Recently, I have enjoyed working on our newly commissioned works.  Collaborating with composers and bringing to life music that has not yet been performed is very exciting.

What are your hobbies?
I spend a lot of my free time with my wife Abby, and my son Conner.  We enjoy traveling, cooking (mostly on the grill!), and being outside.

What advice would you give to an aspiring young trombonist?
Listen! Immerse yourself in as many different styles of music as possible.  Listen to many musicians and what makes them unique.  Try to incorporate that sound or style into your own one of a kind voice.  Don't be afraid to bring your personality out in your performance!
